REC Foundation Announces the Winners of the 2016 Online Challenges

GREENVILLE, TX – March 4, 2016 – The Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the 2016 Online Challenges, which encourage students to apply what they’ve learned through VEX Robotics and additional interests to produce videos, work on engineering design, demonstrate website design, or even photography. Students who submit have an opportunity to share their ideas, win prizes and even receive a chance to compete at VEX Worlds.

The winners of the 2016 Online Challenges are as follows:

  • FUTURE Foundation Robot Construction Challenge: Incubating with Lasers – Team 5606A – FAHS Feilding High School – New Zealand
  • VEX Game Design Animation Challenge: Mass Mayhem – Team 7682 – Wingus & Dingus Robotics – New Zealand
  • VEX IQ Challenge Promote Award: Our VEX IQ Experience – Team 59 – H.S. Robotics – Hawaii
  • VEX Robotics Competition Promote Award: What is VEX Robotics – Team 7121 – Archbishop McCarthy High School – Florida

VEX Worlds will take place in Louisville, Ky. on April 20-23 where 1,000 of the best robotics teams from around the world will gather for three and a half days of competition under one roof for one epic celebration to crown the 2016 World Champions for the VEX IQ Challenge, VEX Robotics Competition, and VEX U. About the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation

The REC Foundation seeks to increase student interest and involvement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by engaging students in hands-on, sustainable and affordable curriculum-based robotics engineering programs across the U.S. and internationally. The REC Foundation develops partnerships with K-12 education, higher education, government, industry, and the non-profit community to achieve this work.

2025-2026 Signature Event Updates

  1. An Event Partner wanting to apply to host a Signature Event must have hosted events for at least 2 seasons prior to applying. 
  2. Signature Events must use the officially branded award banners for the Excellence Award and Tournament/Teamwork Champions Award.
  3. When hanging field skirts the VEX Robotics logo/brand name can not be covered up on the competition fields.
  4. VEX V5 Robotics Competition Signature Events may have regional capacity and max per organization restrictions lifted 8 weeks before the event if the event is not full (similar to the process already in place for VEX IQ Robotics Competition Signature Events).
  5. Minimum pit size reduced to 8’x 8’ instead of 10’x10’.
  6. Beginning in the 2025-2026 season, the REC Foundation will collect $10 instead of $5 per team registration on all Signature Events. This is to help offset travel costs for REC Foundation staff to support these larger events.

2025-2026 Signature Event Application Reminders

  1. Existing Signature Events only need to complete the Final Application (due by March 31, 2025)
  2. New Signature Event concepts will need to complete the Initial Proposal by January 31, 2025 and if approved, complete the Final Application by March 31, 2025.
