Joseph Amaro serves as the VEX Robotics Coordinator for the Sweetwater Union High School District in California, where he has built a model robotics program recognized across the state and beyond. Drawing on his background in Career Technical Education (CTE) and industry experience in telecommunications, electronics, manufacturing, and transportation, Amaro has developed comprehensive robotics initiatives that integrate technical skill development with character education.
Amaro holds five CTE teaching credentials and previously developed the Engineering for Manufacturing course at Montgomery High School. His practical and instructional experience has informed his leadership in expanding the district’s robotics offerings, including the successful implementation of middle and high school VEX Robotics leagues. These leagues provide students with multiple, cost-effective competition opportunities each season.
Under his coordination, the district hosts five VEX competitions annually, including high school, middle school, and IQ State Championships. Known for their high-quality organization and positive environment, these events have become benchmarks in California’s VEX community. In recognition of these achievements, the district received the 2023 California Golden Bell Award for its robotics league program.
Beyond competitions, Amaro emphasizes values such as generosity, appreciation, and service. Through hands-on projects—such as using engraving tools to create thank-you gifts and recognition items—students learn to acknowledge the contributions of others while gaining practical skills.
Amaro also mentors educators and event organizers throughout the region, contributing to the broader growth of VEX programs across California. His leadership has helped shape a district-wide culture that values both technical excellence and community engagement, making robotics a meaningful part of student development.
