From Worcester to Worcester: A 7,781 Mile Robotics Journey

Imagine building a competition-ready robot in just 24 hours with minimal knowledge of the game and limited experience with a robotics kit. That was the reality for VEX V5 Robotics Competition team 22935A, Galactic Einsteins, who traveled from Worcester, South Africa, to Worcester, Massachusetts, coincidently to compete at the WAVE at WPI Signature Event. Despite the challenge, they embraced the engineering design process, pushing their skills to the limit. Read more about this inspiring team and their journey from their settlement in South Africa to Worcester Polytechnic Institute to compete on the global stage in the VEX V5 Robotics Competition.

Fulfilling Our Vision: Students in Action

Because they believe in the transformative power of STEM education, our partners and donors generously commit resources to Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (RECF) programming. Did you know that students are also instrumental in expanding opportunities for their peers through educational conversations with elected officials? This fall, four students from VEX V5 Robotics Competition team 91U traveled from the Philadelphia suburbs to the state capitol in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to connect with their representatives. These meetings were preceded by a training session with the Student Association for STEM Advocacy (SASA). We are so proud of our student ambassadors for their passionate dedication to making STEM education accessible for all.

International Robotics Honor Society students recognized on stage at VEX Robotics World Championship

International Robotics Honor Society

The International Robotics Honor Society (IRHS) was established in 2018 to recognize high school students for excellence, not only for their efforts on competitive robotics teams, but for academics, personal character, and community service. The RECF currently has sixty-two schools in four countries with chapters.

As a member of an IRHS Chapter, students gain access to a network of like-minded peers and mentors who can support their growth and development. Students must demonstrate evidence of significant leadership accomplishments, service to school and community, and good character. Members have the opportunity to participate in exclusive events and workshops, enhancing their skills and knowledge in the field of robotics.

Did You Know…

By the end of 2030, an estimated 3.85 million additional jobs requiring proficiency in technical fields will be created in the U.S. Of those, 1.4 million jobs risk going unfilled unless we can grow the pipeline for workers in STEM fields such as skilled technicians, engineering, and computer science.

2025-2026 Signature Event Updates

  1. An Event Partner wanting to apply to host a Signature Event must have hosted events for at least 2 seasons prior to applying.
  2. Signature Events must use the officially branded award banners for the Excellence Award and Tournament/Teamwork Champions Award.
  3. When hanging field skirts the VEX Robotics logo/brand name can not be covered up on the competition fields.
  4. VEX V5 Robotics Competition Signature Events may have regional capacity and max per organization restrictions lifted 8 weeks before the event if the event is not full (similar to the process already in place for VEX IQ Robotics Competition Signature Events).
  5. Minimum pit size reduced to 8’x 8’ instead of 10’x10’.
  6. Beginning in the 2025-2026 season, the REC Foundation will collect $10 instead of $5 per team registration on all Signature Events. This is to help offset travel costs for REC Foundation staff to support these larger events.

2025-2026 Signature Event Application Reminders

  1. Existing Signature Events only need to complete the Final Application (due by March 31, 2025)
  2. New Signature Event concepts will need to complete the Initial Proposal by January 31, 2025 and if approved, complete the Final Application by March 31, 2025.
