Details
Award: Inspiration All Star
Year: 2025
Title: Robotics Instructor, Engineer
Location: Perth, Western Australia

Daniel Braithwaite, a former mechanical engineer based in Perth, Western Australia, has played a key role in expanding his school’s robotics program and promoting STEM education across the region. Since transitioning into education, he has led the growth of his school’s VEX robotics program from four teams and 20 students in 2021 to 17 teams involving over 70 students by the 2024–25 season.

In addition to teaching STEM classes and running an after-school robotics club, Braithwaite organizes weekend scrimmages and holiday workshops focused on building and coding. His efforts have helped create a strong robotics culture within the school, with older students mentoring younger peers.

Understanding the geographical isolation of Perth, Braithwaite has arranged opportunities for students to participate in interstate and international competitions, including the VEX Robotics Australian National Championships and the VEX Robotics World Championship. These experiences have broadened students’ perspectives and fostered continued interest in STEM fields.

In 2023, Braithwaite led the creation of the VEX Robotics Western Australia State Championships. Working with local partners, he brought together both VEX IQ and V5 competitions in a single event. By securing industry and university sponsorships, he helped establish a sustainable, high-quality competition that has expanded participation and visibility of robotics in the region.

Through his leadership and commitment, Daniel Braithwaite has contributed significantly to the growth of robotics education in one of the world’s most remote capital cities, creating lasting opportunities for students and schools across Western Australia.

2025-2026 Signature Event Updates

  1. An Event Partner wanting to apply to host a Signature Event must have hosted events for at least 2 seasons prior to applying.
  2. Signature Events must use the officially branded award banners for the Excellence Award and Tournament/Teamwork Champions Award.
  3. When hanging field skirts the VEX Robotics logo/brand name can not be covered up on the competition fields.
  4. VEX V5 Robotics Competition Signature Events may have regional capacity and max per organization restrictions lifted 8 weeks before the event if the event is not full (similar to the process already in place for VEX IQ Robotics Competition Signature Events).
  5. Minimum pit size reduced to 8’x 8’ instead of 10’x10’.
  6. Beginning in the 2025-2026 season, the REC Foundation will collect $10 instead of $5 per team registration on all Signature Events. This is to help offset travel costs for REC Foundation staff to support these larger events.
