What are the dimensions of the pit area?

Description

Pits are 8′ x 8′ workspaces made of pipe and drape, approximately 8′ foot in the back and 4′ along the sides. Teams cannot remove the pipes/drapes, but may take their team sign with them as they depart. Teams may decorate their pit areas using tape (no pins, staples, floating balloons, etc. are permitted). Each pit will have power outlets, one table, two chairs and a trash can.

Teams will not be allowed to bring VEX IQ Robotics Competition fields or portions of fields into the Convention Center. Game elements are allowed but no field perimeters or tiles are allowed. Survey feedback and discussions with our community suggests that this policy be put in place for multiple reasons:

  • Many student centered issues take place in the pit areas. We want to encourage students to develop their own strategy with their alliance partner and we believe this is best done at the practice fields.
  • With many individuals in the walkways around pits with fields, it has historically created dangerous congestion and crowd control issues. We are required by the Fire Marshall to maintain open aisles.

We have 80 practice fields at the VEX Robotics World Championship. Our practice field procedures will be as follows:

  • 2 teams will share a field at all times.
  • VEX IQ Robotics Competition will have 5-minute cycle times on the practice fields. With a staggered start (as we did last year), half of the fields will be reset every 2.5 minutes which will get teams on the fields faster.
  • If a team wants to practice with their alliance partner, we encourage them to come to the fields together so they can be placed on the same field.
  • If a team wants to practice on their own, they will be placed on a field with another team that is there alone.

We hope this encourages more student-centered collaboration, allows teams to develop their own strategies, and lessens the congestion in the pit areas. If fields are found in pits or other areas in the Convention Center, it can lead to a rule T4 violation.

2025-2026 Signature Event Updates

  1. An Event Partner wanting to apply to host a Signature Event must have hosted events for at least 2 seasons prior to applying.
  2. Signature Events must use the officially branded award banners for the Excellence Award and Tournament/Teamwork Champions Award.
  3. When hanging field skirts the VEX Robotics logo/brand name can not be covered up on the competition fields.
  4. VEX V5 Robotics Competition Signature Events may have regional capacity and max per organization restrictions lifted 8 weeks before the event if the event is not full (similar to the process already in place for VEX IQ Robotics Competition Signature Events).
  5. Minimum pit size reduced to 8’x 8’ instead of 10’x10’.
  6. Beginning in the 2025-2026 season, the REC Foundation will collect $10 instead of $5 per team registration on all Signature Events. This is to help offset travel costs for REC Foundation staff to support these larger events.

2025-2026 Signature Event Application Reminders

  1. Existing Signature Events only need to complete the Final Application (due by March 31, 2025)
  2. New Signature Event concepts will need to complete the Initial Proposal by January 31, 2025 and if approved, complete the Final Application by March 31, 2025.
